Rural roads make up the majority of Idaho’s roadway network, 87% of total road mileage.
In 2024, drivers 19 and younger were nearly 4x as likely to be involved in aggressive driving crashes as other drivers, and drivers 20–24 were 2 times as likely.
Crash risk is particularly high during the first months of licensure. Data indicate that the crash rate per mile driven is about 1.5x as high for 16-year-old drivers as it is for 18–19-year-old drivers.
While 72% of all crashes involving youthful drivers occurred in urban areas, 72% of the fatal crashes involving youthful drivers occurred on rural roadways.
